With Christmas time and all the reunions that come with it fast approaching, it is mandatory for everyone to put their best face forward. This means having flawless, acne-free skin.

Tips by Proactiv’s newest celebrity spokesperson: Alex Gonzaga

As an actress, comedienne and TV host, it is part of Alex Gonzaga’s job to take good care of herself, especially her skin. Being on the limelight, her face has to be camera-ready at all times.

Maintaining a clear and radiant skin is a lot of work and the 27-year old knows she needs to keep an eye on her overall lifestyle to do this. From what she eats to what she does off-cam, Alex walks us through her hacks to acne-free skin:

1. A good night’s sleep is key
“Sleep helps the skin recover after a long tiring day so I make sure I get enough rest every night,” she explains. Stress causes sebaceous glands produce more oil and make skin extra oily leading to formation of acne. Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night has been proven reduce one’s stress level.

2. I chug lots of water
Increasing the amount of water you drink is a great way to flush out internal toxins and hydrate your skin from the inside out. Alex shares she always keeps a bottle of water on standby to keep her hydrated during long hours of shoot.

3. Exercise is good for blood circulation
Physical activity cuts stress which may contribute to acne. Improved blood circulation helps the skin by sending more oxygen to your skin cells and carrying the cell wastes away. “I do pilates regularly. It is fun and a great way to relieve stress,” Alex adds.

4. Sleeping with makeup on is a big no-no
No matter how tired she is after a long day at the set, Alex religiously takes time to remove all traces of makeup from her face to make sure her pores are not clogged with sweat, dust, and dirt.

5. Invest in over-the-counter product
“Proactiv has always been part of my beauty regimen for six years. Its specially-formulated ingredients help treat and prevent acne so I won’t have to deal with it,” Alex shares.

Alex swears by Proactiv, the leading anti-acne treatment product which is safe and effective for almost everyone.

Composed of the complete 3-Step System to knock out acne, Proactiv is very easy to use. Step 1 is the Renewing Cleanser, an oil-free, soap-free medicated exfoliating cleanser that kills acne-causing bacteria with U.S. prescription-grade benzoyl peroxide. Step 2 is the Revitalizing Toner, a refreshing alcohol-free toner that refines and purifies pores. Step 3 is the Repairing Treatment, a feather-light, invisible medicated treatment that kills acne-causing bacteria.

Every Proactiv kit comes with a free Proactiv Refining Mask, a rich, deep-cleansing mask formulated with sulfur, a proven acne- fighting ingredient that reaches deep into the pores where blemishes begin.

“Proactiv requires less than five minutes a day. It’s convenient and it works,” shares Alex.
Take it from the celebrity. These beauty hacks are your sure way to a smooth and acne-free skin just like Alex’s.

My Skin Care Tips
Alex actually covered most of the skin care tips that I would recommend, but here are a few that I would like to add her tips above.

1. Makeup and makeup tools can make or break your skin
Always make sure your makeup products are stored properly and sanitized. Keep in mind that other makeup products' shelf life are way shorter than others, so please make sure you toss 'em after the expiration dates. You must wash and sanitize your makeup brushes and sponges religiously to get ride of all the bacteria and build ups.

2. Avoid touching your face
Here is one of the best tips that I can probably give you. I for one used to always touch my face, particularly my chin and jawline. So it wasn't a surprise when I get HUGE and UGLY zits on those areas. If you must touch your face, please do so after washing your hands first.

3. Treat your skin, at least weekly
If you can't afford regular facials, opt for affordable face masks instead. You can even create your own mask using natural ingredients found in your kitchen. Whenever I get zits out of nowhere, I use Proactiv Refining Mask at night and let it stay overnight (for the really hug and bad ones).

Alex Gonzaga for Proactiv | The first Filipina face of Proactiv

Proactiv, the skin care product choice among Hollywood’s elite finally found the perfect Filipina who embodies the brand. Young, charming and most importantly, a loyal user of Proactiv, actress and comedienne Alex Gonzaga is the first Proactiv Filipino endorser.

“The Proactiv 3-Step System has been an important part of my daily skin care routine for years! It is effective and easy to use. I am so thrilled to be the first Filipina face of Proactiv and tell everyone all about my experience using it,” the 27-year old TV host shares. “Its mild formulation gently exfoliates my skin, removes excess oil and delivers powerful acne-fighting medicine.”

Being an in-demand celebrity causes stress and fatigue which may take a toll on the skin. The long hours of tapings and shoots, the never-ending mall shows and pounds of make-up cause damages on the skin such as zits and breakouts. She knows, however, that with Proactiv’s dermatologically tested ingredients, her skin stays clear, radiant and acne-free.

Even with her frenetic schedule, Alex finds time to adhere to Proactiv’s simple and easy 3-Step System. “As my beauty regimen before going to sleep, I apply Proactiv’s Step 1 which is the Renewing Cleanser. You can feel it gently removing impurities in your skin with its exfoliating beads,” Alex explains.

The Renewing Cleanser is an oil-free, soap-free medicated exfoliating cleanser that kills acne-causing bacteria with U.S. prescription-grade benzoyl peroxide. The ultra-fine micro-crystal benzoyl peroxide penetrates pores fast while being gentle on the skin.

“I follow it up with Step 2 which is the Revitalizing Toner,” Alex continues. Proactiv’s Revitalizing Toner is refreshing alcohol-free toner that refines and purifies pores. Its Glycolic acid exfoliates dead skin cells to help keep pores unplugged while its botanical-rich formula soothes and hydrates acne-prone skin.

“Step 3 is the Repairing Treatment. I just squeeze a pea-sized amount on my palm and spread it on my face,” she adds.

The Repairing Treatment is a feather-light, invisible medicated treatment that kills acne-causing bacteria preventing zits and acne.

Each Proactiv kit comes with a free Refining Mask. This Refining Mask makes a great leave-on spot
treatment at night for better complexion in the morning.

“We are proud to have Alex Gonzaga as the first Filipina face of Proactiv. She is beautiful, spontaneous and hip, making her a perfect fit for the brand,” says Proactiv Philippines General Manager, Mari del Rosario. “With Alex heading our local campaign, we hope to reach out to more Filipinos and Filipinas and encourage them to take a step and fight acne today.”

Proactiv is available in 30-day kit (P 2,495.00) and 60-day kit (P 3,995.00) and is exclusively distributed at all Watsons nationwide.

Skin White Solutions Superior 10-in-1 Soap - Review and Photos

I always look forward to taking long baths. This is my "me time" wherein I can just relax and pamper myself after a long day at work. Thus, I always try to find products that will make my bath time even more luxurious - without breaking my budget, of course. ;-)

Let me share with you a staple in my bathroom essentials: Skin White Solutions Superior 10-in-1 Soap. This soap is meant for the face and body, but I prefer using it just on the latter.

Skin White Solutions Superior 10-in-1

Here is the description on their packaging:
"Superior ingredients are put together to function as a whitening system that effectively stimulates cells in the dermis to produce more collagen. It reduces melanin production of the skin as a reaction to UV exposure.  Effectively slows down aging process, therefore prevents formation of wrinkles. It gently removes impurities and residual rough skin. Soften and nourish skin, encourages growth of new and healthy skin cells. Rich in antioxidants and it prevents moisture loss and dryness. It consists of excellent properties to enhance whitening effect. The set includes clinically proven ingredients and formula, which will guarantee you fast whitening results."

What was my experience?
I love this soap. First of all, it smells really good. It really helps in whitening (or at least brightening) my skin. I was born with a relatively light skin, but this soap really helps in giving my skin tone that oomph it needs. I like the fact that it's anti-aging, something I consciously try to look for in products since I'm in my late 20s. The level of moisture it leaves on my skin is fairly enough. It's not sticky (which I hate) but not dry as well. The best thing about it is the price. It's only Php120 yet you get 150g worth of product. That's 15 grams more than the average soaps I find from other sellers. Also, the fact that it's locally made and owned makes it even better.

The downside? It melts rather quickly so slicing it up is highly recommended. I prefer using this in the evenings only. I use citrusy soaps in the morning because those wake up my senses better.

PROS:
  • Does the job in whitening/brightening my skin
  • Moisturizing without the sticky feeling
  • Smells good
  • Very affordable
  • Locally made/available
  • Expiration date is indicated

CONS:
  • It melts quickly
  • Might not work for you if you have extremely dry skin

VERDICT:

 I will repurchase!

Kanebo Sala Hair Cologne - Review and Photos

Who loves smelling fresh all the time? Don't we all? Being a daily commuter, I'm always exposed to pollution and dirt. Our erratic weather here in the Philippines surely doesn't help either. As much as I try to keep myself smelling good always (by taking a bath twice a day, using deodorant and perfume), the aforementioned factors could always leave my hair "amoy araw", like cigarette/smoke and sometimes like "ulam" (food). What is the quick fix for this hair issue? Hair cologne!

Hair cologne is a big hit in Japan. Actually, I think this hair arsenal started there. My sister got me 2 hair colognes from her recent trip to Japan: one from Shiseido and this one from Kanebo.

Kanebo Sala Hair Cologne

Kanebo Sala Hair Cologne smells like a good mix of floral and slight fruity scents. For me, this is a kikay bag staple especially on date nights after work. The boyfriend is taller than me so I wouldn't want him to sniff on a smelly (and by smelly I mean "amoy araw", cigarette, etc) head of hair. I really can't tell you much about it because the details on the bottle aren't in English.

What was my experience?
It really helped in getting rid of the bad smell. Some girls might find this a little bulky to tote around, but I personally don't mind. My only issue with this product is that it could reduce the volume of my hair. It's a cologne, so when I use it, I actually wet my hair, so using it sparingly is a must. I also don't know what are the ingredients used to create this product. Hopefully it doesn't have SLS.

PROS:
  • Helps in getting rid of the bad smell
  • Smells good
  • Not heavy to tote around
  • Available online but online (ebay and IG) sellers' prices are twice its original price

CONS:
  • Could leave my hair limp because it wets the hair
  • I don't know the ingredients used
  • Not available in leading supermarkets and dept stores

If you can find a dry shampoo that also gets rid of the bad smell of the hair, I say go for that. You get or keep the volume of your hair while getting rid of the bad smell.

VERDICT:

 I might repurchase.

Majolica Majorca Skin Remaker Pore Cover in BO10- Review,Photos,Swatches

I'm all about Japanese makeup. I love how innovative they are with the products they come up with, and how these products really keep their promise. But what I love most about them? They work perfectly for my skin type and color.

I was so happy when Majolica Majorca finally reached our shores. They're not exactly cheap (price-wise), so I was a little apprehensive to try them. Anyway, I've been using this foundation (together with their primer) for months now, and here is my review.

Majolica Majorca Skin Remaker Pore Cover is a powder foundation that works for both skin types, though I think it works better for oily/combination skin. My shade is BO10. Its velvety smooth, finely milled powder blends perfectly on my skin, even more when I use it with their primer. I especially love the glamorous and luxurious packaging. The formula worked for me because it kept my oil at bay, and minimized my pores a little (together with the primer). It didn't irritate my skin nor caused zits. I use the sponge that comes with it because I feel that the coverage it gives is better that way. It didn't have a distinct scent also.

Majolica Majorca Skin Remaker Pore Cover

PROS:
  • Keeps my oil at bay
  • Minimizes the appearance of my pores (with the primer)
  • Didn't cause any irritation
  • Locally available

CONS:
  • Pricey
  • Limited shades (I think they have 3 or 4?)
  • It'll work better when a primer is used underneath

VERDICT:

 I might repurchase.

V&M Naturals Jagermeister Pore Suit Soap - Review and Photos

My love for soaps made of natural and healthy ingredients started when I used this soap. I was having really awful breakouts back then, and I felt like my cleansers aren't doing their job, so I went to V&M Naturals in SM North Annex and I asked what can I use aside from tea tree soaps and kojic soaps. I was very specific on what I want: something will thoroughly clean my skin and pores without drying my skin. Tea Tree and Kojic could be a little harsh and sting my skin so I was looking for a more gentle yet effective alternative, and they gave me this: Jagermeister Pore Suit.

V&M Naturals Jagermeister Pore Suit

V&M Naturals Jagermeister Pore Suit soap cleanses and clears pores from deep within. It also claims that it can dramatically reduce the size of our pores and can help in preventing blackheads and whiteheads.

What was my experience?
It's an excellent facial soap for those with oily/combination skin like me. My skin feels really clean and firm after using, making this my #1 facial soap. It doesn't dry out my skin unlike tea tree and kojic soaps. As for the size of my pores, they're still apparent especially when it's humid. I don't really think that can be improved. It's in my genes and I've accepted them since my teenage years. My doctor even told me apparent pores are fine, as long as they're clear and clean - which is why I can't be without this soap!

PROS:

  • Cleans and clears my skin and pores thoroughly
  • My skin feels firm and refreshed after every use
  • It doesn't dry out my skin
  • It's made of natural ingredients
  • Locally made
  • Available online and selected locations

CONS:

  • It's a bit expensive compared to most soaps (Retail price is Php295 but I got it on sale - 5 soaps for Php1000)
  • The label doesn't indicate the expiration date
  • Not available in leading local supermarkets and dept. stores

VERDICT:

I will repurchase! Actually, this is my second bar already. ;)

Bag O' Shrimps SM Megamall - Review and Photos

The boyfriend and I don't frequent SM Megamall, but it was a holiday, so for the first time we went there for our date. I've been wanting to try this place for months now, especially because I've been hearing a lot of good feedbacks about their food. I always enjoy trying new restaurants with my boyfriend because we're both foodies. So we went to Bag'O Shrimps in the Atrium, SM Megamall.

Bag'O Shrimps

Bag'O Shrimps reminds me of southern style seafood cooking: shrimps and mussels in cajun style seasoning with corn still on the cob. It generally reminds me of the movie Forrest Gump! The boyfriend and I love sea food and spicy dishes in general, so our expectations for their food is pretty high.

The restaurant:

\

The menu:

The diners:

Yours truly with the Boyfriend <3

What did we order?

Calamares

Bag of Shrimps in Bag O' Momma

What was our experience?
Their menu was short and straight to the point, which is okay since a big menu could be overwhelming sometimes. We were there around lunchtime and I was expecting the place will be packed, but there were 3-4 tables available. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, most especially Cherie.

We ordered Bag of Shrimps with Corn. We were supposed to include local sausage to the bag but they ran out of it. We also included Calamares. Waiting time for the food was a bit long, like 15-20 minutes, so if you're just on your lunch break, you might want to go somewhere else. We assumed it's because they're short on staff when we were there (there were only 2 servers that time, and they're also the cashier).

We weren't provided with any plastic gloves or bib. It's probably because there'll be an extra charge for those. The boyfriend and I decided to eat with our hands since they have a washing area in the restaurant. Honestly, we just didn't want to pay extra for the gloves and bib. :-p

The food was excellent! The Bag O' Mama is sweet, salty with right amount of heat in it. We'll probably try it with the sausage next time. The Calamares is just okay. Nothing special. But we love the dip. :)

We recommend you get the table with couches. It's far more comfy than the steel chairs they have. As expected, the bill also took a while to arrive.

PROS:

  • Excellent staff, very friendly and accommodating especially Cherie
  • Bag of shrimps are highly recommended
  • The restaurant's ambiance is casual
  • The interiors are pretty cool and roomy

CONS:

  • Local sausage wasn't available
  • Waiting time for the food was a bit long
  • Won't recommend to yuppies on lunch breaks
  • The bill took a while to arrive
  • A little pricey - but definitely worth it

VERDICT:

 We will definitely go back!

Fabyoulush Coffee Detox Beauty Bar - Review and Photos

I'm not a huge coffee fan. Yeah, I know. I'm that kind of person. But a coffee that wouldn't cause heart palpitation, won't affect acidity in my tummy and won't deprive me of my well-deserved sleep? Gimme, gimme! Well, this coffee I'm talking about is not something one should ingest. It's actually a beauty bar. :)

Fabyoulush Coffee Detox Beauty Bar

Fabyoulush Coffee Detox Beauty Bar claims it can help in detoxifying our skin by removing toxins. It can also reduce water retention. It also has seaweed extracts which is a popular slimming and firming agent.

How was my experience?
The smell of coffee is very relaxing so I use this at night. It helps in exfoliating my skin though I would suggest you rub it really gently because the coffee granules (or chunks?) could be rough on the skin. I also noticed it's pretty moisturizing so my skin didn't feel dry after using it. Did I slim down? Highly unlikely. Did my skin become firmer? I haven't really noticed. Maybe when we partner this beauty bar with proper diet and exercise, then we'll see significant changes.

All in all, I really love this beauty bar. It calms down my senses after a long day at work and my skin feels smoother an moisturized after each use. Considering the fact that it's locally made, on top of the other things I love about it, I'll surely repurchase.

PROS:

  • The coffee scent is very relaxing and calming
  • It smoothens and moisturizes my skin
  • Locally made
  • Available online and in selected locations

CONS:

  • The coffee chunks could be a little rough on the skin
  • The label doesn't indicate the expiration date
  • The label doesn't state all the ingredients used
  • Not available in leading supermarkets/dept store

VERDICT:

 I might repurchase.

Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner - Review and Photos

If you're looking for a conditioner that'll miraculously treat your damaged hair without causing any damage on your budget, then Pantene 3 Minute Miracle could be the answer to your prayers.

I got this sample from BDJBox a few months ago. It took me a while to finally write a review because of what happened to my hair (I should probably write a separate post about it. Haha!). Buuuut since my hair is slowly getting better now, I can finally test this baby out.

Pantene 3 Minute Miracle

Pantene 3 Minute Miracle, as the name suggests, is a conditioner that promises to solve your hair problems in just 3 minutes. One would think this is exagerated or completely false, but honestly, it's pretty good for something that comes from a mainstream brand.

It smells REALLY good. It's easy to apply (right balance of thick and thin consistency) and it surely delivers to its promise. I wouldn't call it MY hair miracle only because my hair is severely damaged. It did make my hair soft and shiny, but it's not as good as my HG hair products right now. But really, how can I complain with its price?

I also love how sophisticated the packaging looks. It's also easy to bring when travelling, at least for this size.

PROS:

  • It's one of the best hair conditioners (from the "mainstream" brands) out there
  • It softens my hair and makes it shiny
  • Affordable
  • Locally available
  • Smells good

CONS:

  • Incomplete label. It didn't indicate the ingredients so I don't know if it's filled with silicones or if it has sulfates, parabens, etc.

VERDICT:

I might repurchase if I don't find my HG conditioner.

Davines Nounou Hair Mask - Review and Photos

After years of procrastinating, I'm finally back with a decent product review! Yay!

If you know me personally, you've probably read in one of my social media posts (or heard me rant) about my severely damaged hair.

Last January, a non-professional stylist literally fried and killed my hair with relaxers. YES. Relaxers.
It was sooo bad that I couldn't touch nor comb my hair without a lot of it falling off. Even with the drastic haircut, the damages were still really obvious. It was the first time I sobbed because of my hair :(

6 months later, I was browsing Facebook at work (I'm a Social Media Manager. No rules were broken. :-p) and I saw the Davines PH page. I was so engrossed about the brand that I researched about them for days! And what happens when a beauty enthusiast researches about a new brand they're into? The urge to try their products kicks in! Hahaha!

Davines have a lot of products available that will cater to almost all hair issues we have. Their Nounou line tickled my fancy (this line is for color-treated hair) so I went to Azta Urban Salon and bought the Davines Nounou Hair Mask.

Davines Nounou Hair Mask

It comes in a clear plastic container which we can reuse (so happy about that!). Now don't let its simplicity fool you. Davines means business when it comes to caring for our hair.

It smells... "earthy". I'm sorry, I ran out of adjectives to explain how it smells. (Update: It has a distinct scent that reminds of my mom's perfume. It's a bit overwhelming when you smell it from the container, but after using and rinsing it out, my hair smells pretty good.) I've read some poeple complaining about it, but it doesn't bother me at all. The tetxure is very thick and a bit pastey, which I like because that'll help in making sure I don't waste anything. (You know how those products with runny consistency that usually spills? I hate that.) Also, because of the consistency, I only have to use a teaspoon to a table spoon of the product for my thick mid-length hair.

So, how did it perform? I swear. It's one of the best (if not the best) hair products I've used, and if you'll check my blog, I've used a LOT.

While applying it, my hair instantly feels soft and manageable. I finger comb it into my hair (trying to avoid the roots) concentrating on the lower half. Whenever I do this technique using other products, I'll usually have a shocking amount of falling hair on my fingers. But with Nounou, it's significantly minimized (almost no falling hair now. Wohoo!).

I leave it for 10-15 minutes when I'm in a hurry. On weekends or whenever I have more time, I leave it for 30 minutes. Rinsing it out is a bit of a tedious job, understandably, since it's a deep conditioning hair mask. What makes me love this product even more? I don't have to fight any tangles while rinsing! That is amazingly new for me since the relaxer incident.

My hair is easy to comb (even while it's still wet), soft, and manageable. Whenever I use this hair mask, I don't have to worry about my hair getting frizzy or misbehaving. It was the first time (since it got damaged last January) that I couldn't stop touching my hair! This product definitely made it to my HG hair products. :)

The only downside for me is the price. It's quite expensive and only selected salons are carrying it. But since this product belongs to the "a-little-goes-a-long-way" category, that price should be worth it since it'll last you a long time.

PROS:

  • a hair mask that does what it promises
  • perfect not just for color-treated hair but also for damaged hair
  • little goes a long way
  • locally available

CONS:

  • expensive
  • Update: a bit overwhelming at first when you take a sniff of it from the container, but it's not bothersome after using it.

VERDICT:

 I will definitely repurchase!

P.S.
I'm actually considering getting their Melu products soon. :D
